Formed in 2009, the Willwriting Academy is the dedicated training service provided by the IPW.
Its main aim is to provide high-quality, cost-effective training for all professionals involved in Wills and Probate, whether they are members of the Institute or not. By undertaking regular training sessions, your clients can have confidence that they are using a practitioner who is committed to keeping up-to-date with regulation and dedicated to delivering the highest standard of advice.
All courses are provided by our carefully selected presenters, who are all highly experienced and knowledgeable in their fields.
The Academy currently hosts courses for both new starters and more experienced professionals, including members and non-members. Wherever you're at in your career, the IPW have a course to suit you.

Training Courses
Here are just a few examples of some of the training courses we provide. These have been specifically designed for Full and Affiliate Members who want to take instructions for and draft Wills.
Introduction to Will Writing Course - One day, held four times a year
- Basics and practicalities of becoming a professional Will writer
- Running a successful practice
Will Writing in Practice Course
For Student members who wish to develop their practical skills and technical theoretical skills. - Three days, held four times a year
- Required one month before examination
- Expands on Introduction to Will Writing
- Equips students for home study
- Legal theory
- Practical skills to assess a client's needs and circumstances required for providing an appropriate Will.
Will Instruction Taking in Practice Course
For Sponsored members who want to take instructions for Wills only and have their documents drafted by another Institute member.
- Two days, held four times a year
- Required one month before examination
- Expands on Introduction to Will Writing
- Equips students for home study
- Legal theory
- Practical skills to assess a client's needs and circumstances required for providing an appropriate Will.
Taking Will Instructions Course and Examination
For Associate members who want to take instructions on behalf of an existing Institute member firm only. - One day, held on demand
- Basics of taking instructions and giving advice to clients
- One-hour written examination
- Role play assessment

Continuing Professional Development
What's more, all courses delivered by the Will Writing Academy count towards your Continuing Professional Development (CPD).
Not only does this enable our members to excel in their careers, it also means that they're able to demonstrate their high level of knowledge and skill to consumers.
It's important to bear in mind that not all courses and providers offering professional training are CPD accredited. We have created a list of approved providers if you would like to further expand your skillset.
